The Brief
A family of four were setting out on a full-scale renovation, including a small kitchen extension and a loft conversion, with the goal of transforming their 1950s semi-detached house into a stylish and functional modern home. They wanted a space that reflects their personal taste that plays to their busy lifestyle. The challenge lays in optimising every inch, not only incorporating an open-plan kitchen-diner but also designing a dedicated utility room and creating a small ensuite within the new loft bedroom.
Unlocking potential of creating space
The owner commissioned Atelier Konte to look at reconfiguring the ground floor layout. One of the biggest design hurdles was a bulky concrete chimney breast in the kitchen, which significantly impacted both the flow and functionality of the space. We made the bold decision to invest a significant portion of the budget into its removal; a complex undertaking, but one that unlocked the home’s potential and opened up the space beautifully.
With the chimney gone, we collaborated with the clients to design their new kitchen. To maximise the budget, bespoke cabinetry was made from pine and finished in a soft, timeless green, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Their existing rectangular dining table was swapped for a generous circular one, seating up to eight and fitting the space far more harmoniously.
A fresh look brings timeless character
In the living room, the old-fashioned fireplace was given a fresh new look with a classic and elegant surround, bringing timeless character to the space. A bespoke shelving was designed alongside it, providing much needed storage. Once a dim room, it has now been transformed into a warm and inviting space where the family can relax and unwind together.
Carving out storage and style
In the loft conversion, space was at a premium, but with clever planning, we managed to carve out just enough room for a small yet beautifully designed bathroom. Every detail was carefully considered to make the most of the limited footprint. The family’s teenage daughter was especially thrilled with her new setup, complete with a cosy double bed and a chic dressing table that she personally helped select, adding a touch of her own style to the space.
Lasting legacy created
Ultimately, this project highlights the power of thoughtful design and meticulous space planning. The result is a home that not only meets but exceeds the family’s expectations, one that feels both stylish and functional, perfectly tailored to their needs and ready to be enjoyed for years to come.
