Designing a family home for easy entertaining, Henley-on-Thames

Space(s)
Complete house renovation

Location
Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

The Brief
A stylish, professional couple with a young family wished to transform their home with a full-scale upgrade and extension. Their vision is to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, maximising both the property’s potential and its connection to the garden. Designed for modern family life and easy entertaining, the new space needs to be a perfect balance of functionality and contemporary elegance.

A space that truly reflects the owners
For the four-bedroom home, the goal was clear: a timeless, practical, and comfortable design that embraced the owners’ treasured possessions and collectables. The clients simply wanted a space that truly reflected them; not confined to any particular style, but rather something playful and effortlessly welcoming.

Our work centred on a full-house refurbishment, with a special focus on the downstairs and on the large rear extension. Since the extension was still in the planning phase when we joined the project, we were able to suggest subtle yet meaningful adjustments to the architectural layout.

These changes improved the home’s flow, creating distinct zones that each have their own character and purpose.

Ingenious storage and space adjustments
In the hallway, we adjusted the wall between the hallway and the garage to make room for much-needed storage. We also added a handy understairs storage area for shoes, making everything more organised and accessible. In the formal living room, we designed custom joinery that includes a hidden desk, adding flexibility to the space, perfect for working from home. We also widened the single door opening to the hallway, which had a simple but powerful impact. It made the hallway feel more spacious and brighter, completely transforming the entryway into more welcoming area.

Zonal living brings order
In the open-plan kitchen and dining area, the hand-painted bespoke cabinets and oversized island bring much needed warmth and character. The rest of the space is cleverly divided into different zones for dining, lounging, and entertaining, plus we even managed to fit in a cosy wood-burning stove! For the family snug, the priority was transforming the dark space into something warm and inviting, with seating that is both exceptionally comfortable and durable, designed to accommodate as many people as possible.

Throughout the home, our focus was on creating a relaxed yet thoughtfully curated design, seamlessly integrating the clients’ cherished mid-century lighting and furniture. The result is a space that feels layered and balanced, beautiful yet never over-designed. The perfect setting for everyday life.
